University of Nizwa, Oman, December 12-15, 2009
Mapping Emergent Arab and Muslim Literatures in English
Call for Papers:
The Inaugural Conference of the Centre for Anglo-Arab and Muslim Writing
at the University of Nizwa, Oman.
Mapping Emergent Arab and Muslim Literatures in English (University of
Nizwa, Oman, December 12-15, 2009)
Confirmed Speakers:
- Dr. Amin Malak (Grant MacEwan University)
- Leila Aboulela
- Dr. Syrine Hout (American University of Beirut)
- Dr. Lindsey Moore (Lancaster University, Uk)
This conference invites papers related to the emerging Arab and Muslim
writing in English. There have been an increasing number of Arab and/or
Muslim writers who specifically articulate themes and subjects relevant to
both those identities mediated through the English language. Modern times
have made it increasingly important to engage in a critical understanding
of the intellectual and cultural history of Arab and Muslim literatures in
English, as well as their contemporary significance.
The objective of this conference is to provide a forum where artists,
academics and researchers can exchange ideas and develop the nascent
critical work on these literatures.
The conference welcomes papers related but not restricted to the
following areas:
- Emergent recognition and reading of Arab/Muslim English
Literatures
- Developing critical approaches to these literatures
- The poetics and politics of literatures that exist at the
intersection of two cultures
- Creative representations of Muslim and Arab diasporas
- Critical engagements with the themes of identity, ethnicity,
hybridity and gender as they appear in Arab/Muslim English Literatures
- Post 9/11 Poetry and Fiction
- Postcolonialism, Postmodernism and Islam
- Mapping Arab/Muslim English Literatures within a wider context of
globalization and internationalization of literature
We welcome proposals for papers and panels from writers, academics and
students from different disciplines that deal with these and other ideas
deserving of interest.
DEADLINE FOR PROPOSALS FOR PAPERS AND PANELS: SEPTEMBER 15, 2009.
